Unfortunately, it’s not going to be that easy. “Bleach: The Rescue” kicks everything about this gleaming anime up a notch — lots of blood, sword-fights, a fiery climax at the execution grounds, and some extraordinary character development. But the best portion is that the treacherous conspiracy merely hinted at in prior episodes, which sparks a minor civil war within the Seireitei.

Yoruichi starts the badly-wounded Ichigo on a special current training regimen — to rescue Rukia, he must accomplish conclude bankai (the ultimate release of a zanpakuto) in three days. In the meantime, Uryu has encountered the most horrendous of Soul Reapers, who is responsible for the death of a loved one, and Captain Hitsugaya is confronted by an frail friend who tries to slay him — accusing him of murdering Captain Aizen.

And in the meantime, the conspiracy that’s ripping apart the Soul Reapers is revealed — the identify of the Mammoth Awful and his sidekicks, the reason he wants Rukia plain, and how many people he’ll coldly extinguish to secure what he wants.

“Bleach: The Rescue” is a turning point for the entire series — everything before it has built to this point, and everything in the future will spring from it. For an action anime, it is also quite heavy on the status as it sets up the Broad Bad: faked murders, exact murders, conspiracies, hypnotic tricks, betrayals, a clever triple-cross perpetrated by Gin Ichimaru, and Urahara’s hidden motive in helping Rukia.

There’s also lots of brilliantly explosive action using ice dragons, sad fire, razor-sharp cherry blossoms, exploding Soul Reapers, a giant bone-snake, and a firebird the size of a submarine. The action only serves to underscore the tension that is building throughout the entire season, until it explodes on Sokyoku Hill. It’s also got solid dialogue, some unruffled moments for Ichigo’s pals (hanging out in prison) and some flashbacks to Renji, Rukia, Kira and Momo’s days at the Academy.

Fortunately, all this black stuff is speckled with amusing moments like Ichigo’s relaxation in a healing spring (”I AM GOING TO DROWN YOU!”), and an entire episode in which the characters unwind and recover after the events of “the rescue.”

Our Hero really shows his stuff in this season — Ichigo puts his life on the line to advance an amazing level of spiritual power, and rescue Rukia no matter what happens. Too abominable he turns out to have a freaky dismal side (and Johnny Yong Bosch has a incandescent demon cackle) . And Uryu inadvertently gets to the bottom of his grandfather’s death, and goes to devastating lengths to accept revenge for what happened to him.

But most of the characters gather to shine in this, although Chad and Orihime are somewhat neglected: the Yoruichi-obsessed Soi Fon, the obedient Ukitake and his best buddy Kyoraku, the happily hyperaggressive Zaraki, boy-genius Hitsugaya, and the fusty and arrogant Head Captain Yamamoto (among many others) . We also learn how far Renji will go for Rukia, as well as the correct reason why Byakuya has been so icy and seemingly cruel.

“Bleach: The Rescue” is a colorful arc of action-packed, tightly-wound anime, with a gruesome twist at the core of the fable. Definitely a must-see — especially for everything that comes later.

This third box spot has the final episodes of the Rukia rescue story-arc saga, and it’s greatly interesting as you gaze Ichigo and his friends battle the captains and their subordinates of the seireitei. The action is snappy paced and moving to gape and seeing the hidden agenda of one of the characters advance to light will shock many on who it really is, I feel that not only the action and battles that effect Bleach such a titanic series but many of the characters of the present grow on you as well, and that is what truly makes a large series when you witness a character you like prevail and cheer them on to victory. The extras are a nice touch as well seeing some of the English snarl cast during their takes, and some commentaries with a live plushy Kon in the U.S.A. as well as the standard sneak peeks and textless intro/ending songs. Again the animation is definite and enthralling no distortions, blurriness, or skips to talk of and the cast for both the Japanese/English crew were of course grand VIZ Media like Funimation Corp seem to know unprejudiced which actors/actresses to earn for their shows. So if you’ve already gotten the first two box sets the third one is awaiting you…

Fritz Lang’s METROPOLIS was very successful with both critics and audiences when it debuted in 1927 Berlin–but it was thereafter edited for distribution by Channing Pollock, who disliked it and removed sizable chunks of the film and substantially altered the storyline. The resulting film was admired for its visual style, but it proved a important and box office disappointment. Neglected in the wake of sound, surviving prints of the film were left to corrode and decay–and when it began to advance the home market via VHS and DVD the results were very hit or miss; Blackhawk released a fairly credible version of the truncated film to home video, but for the most piece the quality of these releases varied from barely mediocre to downright unwatchable.

Until now.

A mountainous chunk of METROPOLIS–perhaps as mighty a quarter of more–has been forever lost, but this Kino Video DVD release offers the single best version of the film available. The previously slice footage that calm exists has been restored; gaps in the film have been bridged by the occasional exhaust of stills and explanatory title cards; the film itself has been painstakingly and digitally restored; and the soundtrack is the Gottfried Huppertz recent created for the film’s 1927 Berlin debut. In seeing this version of METROPOLIS, I was struck by how very differently it reads from the previously available truncated version. The visual style and the narrative itself are mighty more lively and cohesive, and in the wake of this restoration it becomes impossible to state the film spot as landmark of international cinema.

Freder Fredersen (Gustav Frohlich) is the son of Joh Fredersen (Alfred Able), who reigns over the astronomical city of Metropolis. Freder is surprised to recognize his lifestyle has been built on the unseen but backbreaking labor of an entire class of unseen workers who tend the machines that originate the city run–and he descends to the subterranean levels of Metropolis in an anguish to understand their lives… and, not incidentally, to accumulate the mysterious but sparkling woman Maria (Brigitta Helm) who has inspired his interest in the workers’ predicament. But his father is concerned by both Freder’s interest and Maria’s activities among the workers, and he turns to scientist C.A. Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) for support. Rotwang has created a robot, and he agrees to give it the likeness of Maria in order to undermine both Freder’s adore for the girl and her beget activities. But Rotwang has a hidden agenda of his own: once the robot has been unleashed, he will utilize her to extinguish Metropolis and thereby dependable revenge on Joh Fredersen for past transgressions against him.

In many respects the epic is simplistic, but the film’s visual style and connotations are anything but. Deeply influenced by such art movements as Expressionism, Objectivism, Art Deco, and Bauhaus, the film is visually fascinating–not only in its scenic designs, but in director Lang’s renowned skill at creating the much crowd scenes that dominate the film and building the lag and tension of the film as it moves toward an intense climax. But while one can–and many do–admire the film purely at this level, there is quite a lot going on in terms of philosophical insist as well: while it offers few viable solutions, the film raises such issues as the relationship between capital and labor, the space of religion in recent society, human reaction to overwhelming technology, and (perhaps most interestingly) the drift of government into a class-conscious corporate entity. And religious motifs abound in the film: a largely deserted cathedral; Moloch; the Tower of Babel; and crosses–intriguingly juxtaposed with a repeating motif of the pentagram-like designs associated with the robot. It is spicy stuff.

There has been complaint that this restoration runs at wrong rush and the performances are therefore unnecessarily jerky. I did not collect this to be the case. In distinct instances the movement is deliberately jerky and mechanical–the workers are a case in point–but beyond this there is nothing for which the incompatibility between mute acting and unusual acting techniques cannot memoir. There has also been some complaint that the title cards should have been left in their fresh German and translated via subtitle. There is a definite validity to this, but it seems a minor quibble; title cards were typically translated in the calm era itself. The DVD includes a number of extras, including collected photographs, biographies of the major figures interested in the film, and two piquant documentaries-one on the restoration process and one on the creation of the film itself. Both are interesting; the audio commentary track by film historian Enno Patalas, however, is mildly disappointing. But when all is said and done, it is the film that counts. And this restoration is a noteworthy achievement, to say the least, a project which brings a gargantuan landmark of world cinema succor from the edge of the abyss. Indispensible; a must-own.

This is the 139 puny, tinted version, with the disjointed music, distributed by “JEF films” and labeled “Aikman Archive” in yellow on the box. The sound is awful and the video quality is dreadful. For worthy video quality, gather the version produced by Kino Video instead. although the Kino version has a poor sound track, at least the video quality is very valid. For advantageous sound, derive the Moroder version of Metropolis.

This review assumes that you have already seen Metropolis. For those strange with Metropolis, it is considered “the” first SciFi movie — the robot, the cold visual effects of future cities, and a few aroused scientist lab scenes. But it is only a big movie IF you gaze the legal version. Sadly, there are more then 6 versions of the film floating around —

Black/white, awful music, uninteresting playback

B/W, terrible music, quickly playback

tinted, dreadful music, plain playback

tinted, sterling music, hastily playback

plus a few versions with dreadful video quality (the DVD version is such a case) and other versions with missing scenes, a non-logical lope to the fable line due to terrible editing, etc.

Unfortunately, the plot with prints of Metropolis is a bit of a mess. Those looking for the tinted Girogio Moroder sound track should NOT gather this tape.

Although the bustle time of this version of the movie is 139 minutes, it is actually missing scenes that are in the 90 puny Kino Video and Moroder versions of the tape. The reason is that this 139 exiguous tape is accelerate at a SLOWER rush than the Kino tape is. Also, the music is totally out of sync and unrelated to the action.

Unfortunately, Moroder’s copy is not available from anywhere. At $24.95, I’d hoped that the folks at Amazon.com had found a copy but this is not the case. Someone should win a advantageous copy of the Moroder tape, sell that, and burn all of the other versions. Although some people object to Moroder’s rock soundtrack, at least it follows the yarn line and is an genuine sound track on its believe.

I was fortunate enough to have seen Moroder’s copy the first time I saw Metropolis and I am very tickled that I did.

To add further insult to injury, the CD of Moroder’s soundtrack is not the same as the music that appearred in the movie. The CD has some additional songs and is missing some others. So you can’t redub a video from the CD. So don’t pick up the “Moroder CD” and demand to remix your maintain copy of the video.

OK, having provided all of the background info, there is the review:

139-minute B&W version published by JEF films. The mask says it is a “newly restored version”, but image quality is so dreadful that I would rather call it “newly destroyed version”. It has actually more missing scenes than both Kino’s and Moroder’s versions, but runs longer because of slower frame bustle.

This position is a bundling of the movies that have previously been released separately, so if you’ve already bought them, there’s no need to rep them again. “The Fancy Bug” gets a fabulous treatment with two discs and plenty of extras. The extras do deal somewhat with the sequels, which is a superb thing, because the rest of the movies are movie only versions. “The Fancy Bug” and “Herbie Rides Again” are wide cloak, while the other two are burly frame. The narrate has plenty of dust and grain to point to its age, but it peaceful looks spicy and is plenty watchable. Audio is rotund surround. While it won’t blow you away, it sounds ample.

Any fan of Herbie will want to fetch these movies. No, they aren’t shiny film making, but they are fun escapism. What else do you need?

This package is impartial unbelievable, these tall light hearted comedies about the stunning bug in one box.

The Germans only pay 28 Dollars (24 Euros) at only 11% off the regular trace, and in the german box every movie has 3 Language tracks (english, german, italian) instead of only 1 in the US box (english) .

I want to point out that I am not comparing two different companies, both websites are hasten by Amazon.

Except the differently designed covers, the german box contains the Trusty SAME MOVIES for HALF the Imprint.

The only thing is, that european DVD’s are set code 2 (instead of spot code 1 in the US), Hollywoods tool to legally rip off all Americans by not let them play objective any DVD in their DVD Player at home (unless you have a codefree DVD player) .

In Germany almost all DVD’s are equipped with more language tracks and available cheaper than in the US.

There was only one Curly, of course - but the vastly underrated Shemp Howard was surely the next best thing, and a class act all the design. Not many fans know that Shemp took a 50% salary lop from his successful solo career to benefit out his kid brother, Moe. He’d been earning twice as remarkable for years as a busy freelance character actor, in memorable cameo bits supporting W.C. Fields, Abbott & Costello, Olsen & Johnson - and honest about everyone else in Hollywood. (And, frankly, having a distinguished easier go of it. Unfortunately for posterity, the 52 year-old Shemp was already past his prime as a knockabout amusing by the time he gamely returned to the team in 1947.)

But game he was, luckily for us. Shemp was blessed with an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime face that was a gift from the comedy gods. After Welcome to Sarajevo and In This World, The Road to Guantanamo is Michael Winterbottom’s most important film. Along with United 93, it’s one of the most important films released by anyone in 2006. In the docudrama, which was produced for British television, Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross recount the travails of the Tipton Three, a trio of Britons detained for two years at Guantanamo Bay. How did these apolitical Muslims end up as suspected terrorists? The directors attempt to answer that qustion by inter-cutting interviews and news footage with recreations of their Kafka-esqu journey. It starts with a trip to Pakistan for the wedding of Asif (Afran Usman). In short order, he’s joined by Ruhel (Farhad Harun), Shafiq (Riz Ahmed), and Monir (Waqar Siddiqui). On a whim, they decide to visit Afghanistan: “One, for experience, and two, to help.” It proves to be their undoing. First, they’re caught in a bombing raid; then the Northern Alliance rounds them up as members of al-Qaeda. In the melee, Monir goes missing. The remaining three are shipped to Cuba, where US officials stop at nothing to coerce confessions. There’s a hard-won happy ending, but it isn’t easy to watch–Alan Parker’s Ollie Stone-penned Midnight Express seems downright lyrical in comparison. Further, the acting is inconsistent and the character development is sketchy. Those flaws aside, The Road to Guantanamo is powerful and provocative stuff. –Kathleen C. Fennessy
